OK, now that I've been given some insight into why tractor instead of pusher planes were the way to go, why did the machine gun need to be situated directly in front of the pilot? In later planes, the guns were wing-mounted. What were the technical difficulties preventing this with earlier planes? Even a higher mount for the gun could push the barrel above the propeller. I don't know enough about gun-tech. Why not mount the gun high enough that the pilot can look under it?
