The First Scotland Story

We left after work on Tuesday and arrived in Scotland late on Wednesday. We'd sat through a 2 hour delay on the tarmac at the Gatwick - London Airport because another plane had landed heavily and burst three of its tires, leaving tire scattered on the runway. They opened the emergency runway and sent us off that way. The didn't bother to send us our luggage until 6 hours later. Fun!

While waiting for our luggage, we checked into our rooms and took a nap. By the time we woke, it was too late to go register for the con, so we went out to wander Glasgow and have dinner. I was wearing my Robyn Hitchcock T-Shirt with the upside-down duck on the front. Most of you have seen the shirt; it only says Robyn Hitchcock on the back. As we were walking past a 24-hour convenience store and were looking in (as we'd been looking for one, they do come in handy) I heard someone drunkenly yell something in my direction from right next to me, but I couldn't make out all of it. emmalyon also heard part of what he'd said and fortunately, it was a different part from what I'd heard. I had my back to him at the time, so sadly I don't even know what he looked like. We pieced together what he'd said once we reached the next corner, it was apparently "Wear yer Robyn Hitchcock T-Shirt with PRIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!" in a heavy, drunken Scottish accent. I wish I'd seen his face as I'd love to think it was Kimberly Rew, jealous of Robyn's success.

We tried to have dinner at a smoke-free pub called Phoenix, but it was after 8 and the kitchen was closed. It was a little disconcerting as it was still quite sunny out. We wandered about some more and found dinner at an Italian place with a wisecracking manager. Food was good and afterwards, we headed back to the hotel to find our luggage had arrived and all went to bed to rest for the next day's con.
