But the weekend was not a total loss because I got to go hang out with head58 and aliwings. I got to see the Little General, always fun, and went to a concert by My First and the Gimmie Gimmies.
I arrived Friday at around dinner time and we had random Chineese food. I suggest you try this if you can, if I hadn't I'd never know I like Chicken Chow Mein. That night we mostly hung out and I tested the new air-bed-sofa which was excellent.
Saturday we played some CoH, and started a game of Age of Mythology (board game). We learned the rules and played several turns. Next time we'll be ready to play all the way through. After a few turns it became time to go to the show. We went out into the sleet/freezing rain/snow and drove to the T. On the way we listened to a CD at random and determined it wasn't a good one. Stupid Club is likely headed for the disposal rack. One song may save it, but I'll have to listen to it again.
Taking the T again was fun and nostalgic. I got to see a dog try to race the train, looked like he was as happy as can be running along the golf course. Once we got off, we went to a record store named Nuggets and I bought some good cds and some that we'll have to wait and see. They had boxes there of CDs labeled "100 for $26.99" or "150 for $49.99". Head58 tried to make me buy one, but we realized we'd have to carry it the rest of the evening so we left it there. I also bewildered the store clerk by asking for something really obscure. Ah well, no Stan Freberg commercials for me.
We then went to a comic shoppe called Comicopia and met up with mgrasso and bryant to go to the show. I only purchased ONE comic. I was quite surprised, really, and noticed a very cute woman in the store.
Proceeding from here to dinner along trecherous streets of ice was an adventure with a detour back to the record store. I'd left my purchases there for Head58 to pick up on Monday so I wouldn't have to hold them all through the show. MGrasso was kind enough to let us put all our stuff in his car, so I grabbed them on the way to the resturant.
The resturant was quite good and turns out to be related to the Salem Brewing Company where I'd eaten with emmalyon, juniperblue and dasmarzipan. MGrasso headed out early to meet his friendly female friend and one other person at the venue. One of Head58 and Aliwing's friends had been slated to go to the show as well, but was unable to due to an unusually steep driveway or some such. MGrasso had hopped on the cellphone at this news and persuaded another friend to attend. We met up with MGrasso, before she showed up, but after his previously designated friend had, so I met her and she seemed quite nice. Two other friends showed up (and I'm not listing people by their lj accounts even though they have them because I don't know what they are) and proceeded inside. Several of us waited outside for the new person, I'll refer to her as X for brevity.
Eventually we all ended up inside and most people checked their coats. I kept mine because I've always kept mine at a show and I'd've felt weird without it. We were able to talk a bit before the show and the new people I met were quite nice. X, from the brief contact I had with her, seemed nice, funny, pretty and smart, but who can really tell in such a situation. Sadly I later discovered she smokes. Banter was had by all.
There turned out to be two opening bands and the first one sucked. The instruments were ok, they played well together, but nothing great. The vocals ruined it all. Scream, scream, scream. Blah Blah Blah. What good are lyrics if no-one can understand them? Since it was all screaming, there wasn't even melody added. I was able to make out a few here and there and realized that if we could understand them, it wouldn't have made a difference as they were quite banal. I think the band was called Fire and Ice. Someone said they used to be called Jericho but were sued and had to change.
The second band was not as bad as the first, they were far worse. The instruments were sloppy, the lead guitarist hadn't played with them for a year and it showed. The screaming was worse, like a Shitzu, high and screechy. The lead "singer" appeared to have a glue-on-mohawk. They all kept pacing backwards and forwards while "playing" and it really made it look like they were an OCD Punk band. At one point of the set, I suppose I looked tired or annoyed or something because Head58 reached over, poked me and said "Hey old man, you ok?" and I yelled back "THEY SUCK!" which many around me heard. Had I been alone or with people I hadn't just met or knew better, I'd likely have yelled at the band (as I was tempted to) both "YOU SUCK" and "GET OFF THE STAGE". Yes, they were that bad. They were called Unseen and after their set there were many jokes about how they should have stayed that way.
Finally Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies came out. They had the shiniest guitars in the world. The bass was yellow and silver glitter, the lead guitar green and silver glitter and the second guitar was blue and silver glitter. The were all wearing identical Hawiian shirts and spent much of the show doing belly-bumps or punching each other repeatedly in a very "guy" way. Banter took up at least 1/2 the show with much audience participation. "Our" guitarist, the blue guy, seemed to feel ignored by the others and indeed, the lead singer and bass player dominated much of the show. Bluey was happy I recognized when he started playing Roundabout by Yes and played as much of it as he knew for me while they kept asking for requests. Aliwings requested The Theme to the Rocky Horror Picture Show and they played it after some arguments amoungst themselves. The bassist then started playing another song and it didn't seem to be the one they agreed upon as the drummer looked pissed and threw a drumstick at him.
The show ended, it was great, they played many good songs including Heart of Glass, Come Sail Away and Wild World. Bluey gave Aliwings his pick at the end of the show. I think she made the night for him, both with her song selection and when she knew what Entropy meant and was able to shout out a one word definition.
MGrasso and his ladies left quickly at the end of the show, he went to get his car. The T-Shirt line was unreachable as it was subsumed in the Coat Check line. Fortunately, I hadn't checked my coat, so I was ushered out the side door and went to find people to wait with. I found MGrasso's ladies and waited with them while he got the car. He arrived, I took the bags and the three of them left. While waiting, I saw the faux punk/glued-on-mowawk-guy carrying wire rack shelving to his van. It amused me.
We went home, determined we didn't have enough energy to finish playing Age of Mythology, picked it up and went to bed. Truly a fun day.
The next day I had the option of accompanying Head58 and Aliwings to the ancestral home of Head58 to celebrate his birthday, but it is far in the wrong direction and I wanted to get home. My apologies to cell23 and ddorange_kitkat and chirping_monkey and anyone else that may have been there that I may have missed. Also apologies to kaisilverwolf whom I likely would have tried to stop and see as she'd then have been on the way home.
