On Friday, I picked urnesha up at the train station, went to my place to pack and we headed out for MA. I'd be dropping Urnesha at artemis44's and heading over to head58 and aliwings's place. She'd said she was hungry and wanted to go to a Wendy's for a salad. The only Wendy's I knew of was in the opposite direction, so I figured we'd see one on the way up. No so easy!
I didn't take the Merritt Parkway since there's no signs for resturants off the highway. Instead I went up 684 to 84. I saw NO Wendys. Early on 684 I saw a sign for Burger King and asked if that'd be ok. She said, if we don't see Wendys by the next BK, then sure. We didn't see another Wendys OR BK until we'd passed Waterbury!
We stopped at the BK and a comedy of errors ensued. We each needed to use the bathroom, but the Women's room was locked and there was no-one in there. Urnesha explained this to the young women behind the counter who repeated everything to the manager who was standing right next to her, but not responding. Finally, he went to try to unlock the door. It didn't work. He dissapeared in back, presumably to find the right key. In the meantime, Urnesha, being fed up, used the Men's. When she came out, she had to tell the workers that there was a discarded diaper in the toilet! Such fun.
Having taken care of pressing matters, she tried to order a grilled chicken salad. Naturally they were out. We ended up eating burgers instead.
By the time I got to Head58's place, we'd been delayed by food, traffic and rain enough that we'd arranged with the wonderful Artemis44 to pick Urnesha up at Head58s. She arrived moments after we did and spirited her away from the gaming carnage inside.
Aliwings and gailee had once again trounced head58 and kevnes in some Star Wars board game and were on to playing San Juan.
Saturday was the day of the BBQ. We headed to BJs for our contributions for the BBQ and Butter Cookies (90lb drum). The BBQ was fun. I got to be a tent pole during a downpour, holding a crutch aloft to keep water from pooling on an awning. The Little General (Head58 & Aliwings's little one) was thrown about my many and sundry people to his delight. He played with wiffleball and bat, frizbee and more. He ran about in the rain and tried desperately to get near the grills. In all, a typical kid outing. One grill is a standard grill and Head58 manned it manfully, cooking up a storm for all those present. The other grill is an open flame with a metal ring above it where one would place the pot. Thermal Output: 150,000 BTUs. That is NOT a typo. That is where seafood was boiled, Corn too! Naturally, these were fascinating to a 4-year-old and I resorted to well over 40 military presses of him to keep him entertained before he then went to mom and kevnes in a rotation of amusement.
Unfortunately, I'd somehow gotten listed as having Lobster instead of steak for dinner. As lobster might kill me, I decided against eating it. Fortunately, the steaks were big and a lovely young woman named Amy, who was wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed her (I believe) a communist superhero, offered me 1/2 of hers, which I gratefully accepted.
I got to chat with many people, most of whom I see once or twice a year, so that was nice. I also got to spend most of dinner chatting with two very attractive young women that worked with the hostess of the BBQ. There are worse ways to spend an afternoon. Unless, of course, they complained to her about me at work today, then I'm just a creepy guy.
Aliwings and I had been tasked with bringing Head58 his dessert as he'd gone home a little early to tend to the bedtime of the General. We blew it. Remembered to bring back everything but. I owe him 1 dessert. To make matters worse, it was to haave been some of Gailee's delicious pie. I have no idea what I can get him to make up for that.
Sunday I got a call from Urnesha letting me know she'd be late by around an hour as Artemis and SO would be in Boston at a nearly forgotten appointment. Instead, I had a nice lunch with Head58, grilling up some burgers, and drove out to get her. I saw the new home of Artemis & SO, sadly sans them, and we headed home. We made really good time, leaving a little after 2 and getting home by 5:45. The main slowing point was stopping at Boston Market on the Pike and having the Slowest Staff in the World (they had an award framed on the wall) serve the food. Fortunately, we were home in plenty of time for CoH and an episode of Juniper Lee.
I hope you all had fine weekends too!
